Introduction

Flooring is an important part of the structure which give pleasant and comfort to the user. In the article we are discussing what is flooring? And what are the different types of flooring?

What Is Flooring?

Flooring is defined as the permanent covering of a floor surface of spaces within building. Floor is covered by various flooring materials.

Different Types of Flooring Materials

The aesthetics view is very important term for the building and by choosing proper and suitable flooring materials it can make more pleasant and attractive. Proper selection of flooring material is very important task. Various kinds or types of flooring materials are used for flooring which can satisfy our requirement for the proper floor of house or building.

1.      Cement Concrete Flooring

·  Concrete is the construction material mostly used as the flooring materials.

·  The concrete as a flooring material is cheaper than other flooring materials.

· The concrete flooring is durable and strong.

·  The ratio used for the concrete flooring of concrete mix is 1:3:6 to 1:5:10.

·  Concrete flooring provides good texture and look to floor.

 

2.      Marble Flooring

· Marble as flooring material is most commonly used material, which is the type of metamorphic rock.

·  Marble is naturally occurring material with various colors like pink, gray and white.

·  Marble mostly used in kitchen commercial buildings, bathrooms, etc. because marble is stain proof and easily cleanable.

·  Marble is easy to maintain and its lifespan is also more than other flooring materials, which make marble best flooring material.


3.      Bricks Flooring

· Brick is an important construction material as well as it can be used as flooring material.

· Brick is good flooring material because for aesthetic versatile, brick flooring can place with various patterns.

·  Brick is durable, fire resistive, having good strength as well as easily cleanable.

 

4.      Glass Flooring

· Glass is expensive flooring material which is provided in special conditions, such as to transmit light from upper floor to lower floor etc.

· Glass available in the form of tiles, and they are fixed in closely spaced frame.

·  Glass flooring provide beautiful appearance to the structure.

5.      Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

· Tiles are available in many options like color, shape, texture and finishes.

· Tile is hard material which is difficult to scratch or dent and difficult to installed as well.

· Ceramic tile and porcelain tiles re popular floor covering materials.

· Clay is used for the formation of ceramic tiles. The ceramic tiles have properties of good compressive resistance, hardness and brittleness s well as they are softer, more comfortable walking surface compare to other types of flooring materials.

·  For the formation of Porcelain tiles need more temperature than ceramic tiles which made porcelain tile more durable, less porous and even more water-resistant than ceramic.

· Porcelain tiles are more expensive than ceramic tiles.





6.      Mud And Moorum

·   From the previous time mud is used as flooring materials which is the moist earth.

·  Cow dung or chopped straws are used in mud to prevent surface from cracking also the mud has good property of thermal insulation.

 


7.      Wood / Timber Flooring

· Wood or timber is one of the most famous materials which are used for flooring.

· The material is used in such area where wood or timber is cheaply available.

·  Every piece of timber or wood has unique aesthetic. This flooring mostly used at dance floor, auditorium, etc.

 

8.      Hardwood and Bamboo Flooring

·  Hardwood and bamboo flooring are similar flooring in case of their performance, installation, cost and maintenance.

· Bamboo is naturally occurring material which is durable.

· The both flooring are durable, and provide natural aesthetic appearance to the floor.

· They are not suitable at wet area such as bathroom, laundry rooms, etc.

· They provide sensible or attractive look to the living area, dining area, etc.

 

9.      Cork Flooring

·   Cork is used in the form of carpet as a flooring material; cork is made up from the cork oak tree.

· The carpets are used n libraries, theaters, etc., because they have property of noiseless.

· Using compression in molding from high graded cork, cork tiles are formed.

 

10.  Vinyl  and Linoleum Flooring

·  Vinyl and linoleum are two different materials, but they similar type of resilient flooring.

·  They both are easy to install and get in the form of tiles, planks and sheet.

·  They are getting with wide variety and colors; they are durable and moisture resistant.

·  The difference between vinyl and linoleum is their materials.  Vinyl is plastic typically PVC, acrylic, and similar polymers.

·  Linoleum is the naturally occurring material, which is obtained by oxidizing linseed oil, dust, primarily jute, resin and cork.

 


11.  Asphalt

·  Asphalt is flooring material getting in different ways, which is a viscous liquid form of petroleum.

·  Asphalt can be mixed with various materials; such as if asphalt and sand mixed with 1:2 proportion then it is called as asphalt mastic which is used to pour on concrete base s flooring cover.  If marbles chips are used with asphalt instead of sand is called as asphalt mosaic.

·  Asphalt tiles are also available which re made up from asphalt fibers, minerals pigments and inert materials.

 

12.  Rubber Flooring

·  Rubber flooring is resilient flooring; rubber flooring is made up from natural or synthetic materials which include recycled rubber tires.

·  Rubber flooring is available in the form of tiles or sheet.

·   On concrete or wooden base, rubble flooring is fixed by using suitable adhesive.

·   Rubber flooring has characteristic of elasticity, so they are mostly used in dance floors and the area have high traffic.

· They have properties of durability, sound absorbent, stain resistance and temperature stability, etc.

 

13.  Vitrified Tile Flooring

·Vitrified tile flooring is the mixture of clay and other minerals like silica, quartz and feldspar, they all are baked at high temperature and formed the vitrified tile flooring.

· They are getting with various designs, colors, prints and textures.

·  They can be also created with natural materials like wood, bamboo as well as marble.

·  They can be used at exterior and interior as well.

 


14.  Laminate Flooring

·  Laminate flooring is the alternative of hardwood flooring; hardwood flooring is more expensive than laminate flooring.

·  Laminate flooring is made up of wood pulp and resin. Laminate flooring is look like real wood, i.e. hardwood flooring.

· Laminate flooring has properties of scratch- resistance, waterproof, noise- resistance, easy to install.

·  The main disadvantage of the laminate flooring is that it cannot be repaired.

 

15.  Tile (Natural Stone)

·  The stone tiles are naturally occurring materials which is expensive than porcelain and ceramic tiles.

·  These tiles provide more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

·  Installation of the natural stone tile is quite hard.

 

16.  Terrazzo Flooring

·  By using chips of granite and marble which are placed in concrete or similar materials, terrazzo flooring is done which is commonly called as mosaic  flooring.

· The terrazzo flooring is durable and easy to maintain.

 


17.  Red Oxide Flooring

· Red oxide flooring is the popular flooring for its durability, and easy maintenance.

·  This flooring is timeless and provide elegant look.

·  For lying of this flooring is quite difficult and required skilled masons.

 

18.  Carpet

· Carpet is a popular flooring material which is getting with various colors matching with the building colors which increase aesthetic view of the building.

·  Carpet is warm and soft, so in living room and bedroom, it can be placed but at kitchen, bathrooms, the carpet is not suitable because it damages due to water and damp.

· Carpet is easy to install and for Maintenance as well.

· It looks fabulous when it is newly installed.

 

19.  Hybrid Flooring

· The combination of laminate and vinyl which create rigid floating floor called as hybrid flooring.

· For getting extremely hard floor, multiple layers of materials pressed together and form hybrid.

 

20.  Flagstone Flooring

· Flagstone is used to form tile of different size in different shapes.

·  Flagstone is sedimentary rock which consists of silica, calcite and iron oxide.
